untitled6A presentation at the European Cancer Congress in Berlin linked increased cancer risk with increased levels of obesity, especially in women. Researchers estimated that 70,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Europe during 2000 could be linked to people being overweight or obese. During 2008, this figure increased to a whopping 124,050 new cases of cancer attributed to excess body weight.

In men, 3 percent of new cancer cases were linked to excess weight. In women, nearly 9 percent of cancers were related to obesity.

Which cancers are most strongly linked to obesity?

    - Endometrial cancer
    - Post-menopausal breast cancer
    - Colorectal cancer

The good news is that cancer risk decreases as weight drops. In one study, women undergoing weight-loss surgery decreased their risk of developing cancer during the next 10 years by over 40 percent!
