US Heart Health Statistics

While the media is focused on whether or not the government will pass new healthcare measures, we Americans continue to ignore our most important resource for health — not the government, not our health insurance, but our own behavior! In a just-released report from the American Heart Association, Americans continue to ignore the basics of heart disease prevention.

“While physicians and surgeons are getting better at treating heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems, too many Americans are ignoring the basic rules for preventing them, according to new statistics from the American Heart Association.”

US statistics on health status that affects our risk of heart disease:

    - Three in every 5 adults do NO vigorous physical activity.
    - Over one in every ten teens is in the highest obesity bracket — and obese teens become obese adults — often developing heart disease.
    - Less than half of patients with heart disease are trying to get their cholesterol in check.

Are you more of a dollars and cents kind of guy? Well, Dr. Clyde Yancy from the Baylor Heart and Vascular Institute was quoted as saying, “So we are spending half a trillion dollars on cardiovascular disease. And we recognize that, as in our younger population the incidence of sedentary life style, obesity, and smoking are going up, that expenditure will continue to rise.” If our Congressmen think healthcare is pricey now, just wait until the consequences of current bad behavior results in more health problems over the next few decades. YIKES!
