New Research on Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy, polyunsaturated fats found in fish, like salmon.

A new study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association tested the effects of feeding a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids to dogs with osteoarthritis. One-hundred twenty-seven dogs were randomly assigned to receive typical commercial food or the high-omega-3 fatty acid food for 6 months. After 6 weeks, those dogs receiving the omega-3 fatty acid supplemented food had an improved ability to get up from lying down and play. After 12 and 24 weeks, walking also improved compared with the dogs fed typical commercial food.

Another important study investigated the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on age-related changes in the brain. In a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience Research, feeding rats a diet rich in the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) reduced the harmful effect of aging on brain tissues that control memory and learning.
