Eat Right To Stay Alert As You Age

A new study published in the medical journal Archives in Neurology links following a healthy Fit As Fido diet with reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease. In this study, researchers from Columbia University followed over 2100 seniors for an average of four years. Diet and tests of memory and cognitive function were analyzed.
This new study from Columbia analyzed the impact of 7 nutrients shown to affect the risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease:
- saturated, monounsaturated, omega-3 polyunsaturated, and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids
- vitamin E
- vitamin B12
- folate
During the study, about one in ten seniors developed Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals developing Alzheimer’s disease were more likely to be older and smokers. Diet also affected risk. Risk was lowest in seniors eating diets rich in the omega fatty acids, vitamin E, and folate.
Diets that included lots of the following foods were linked to the lowest risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease:
- fish
- fruits
- nuts
- poultry
- salad dressing
- tomatoes
- vegetables, including dark and green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale)
Diets that avoided of the following foods were linked to the lowest risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease:
- butter
- high-fat dairy products
- red and meats
