Winter Tips And Pet-Friendly Salt Giveaway
Mid-January and it looks like winter may finally be here. This morning, the thermometer read a brisk 7 degrees when I took the pups out for their morning walk. This is what my terriers consider perfect wheaten weather — there’s a spring to their step and jaunt in their walk. While they do love this weather, it’s important to remember that winter hazards can also pose problems for our pups.
This winter, the ASPCA and Morton Salt have teamed up to promote pet winter safety with a National Pet Winter Safety campaign.
Here are some quick guidelines for winter pet safety from the ASPCA and Morton Salt:
- Use pet-friendly (salt free and chloride free) ice melters such as Morton® Safe-T-Pet®.
- Keep anti-freeze high on shelves in sealed containers and quickly cleaning any spills/leakage.
- Limit outdoor time for pets when temperatures drop below freezing.
- Check warm spots on cars, such as hoods, where animals might seek shelter from the cold.
- Keep pets on a leash, especially dogs, which can become disoriented or lost when once familiar surroundings are covered in ice and snow; and
- Make sure pets are wearing identification tags and proper outerwear as needed.
You can help Morton Salt help the ASPCA by becoming a Morton Salt Facebook Fan. For every unique Facebook fan “like” received on Morton’s Facebook page through Jan. 31, 2012, Morton will donate $1 to the ASPCA up to $55,000.
And as a thank you for helping, Morto
n Salt will send a winter safety kit including a blanket, pet-friendly salt, a scraper, and a leash to one randomly selected winner from folks posting comments below this blog today through next Wednesday. So add your comment below, “like” Morton Salt’s Facebook page, and stay winter safe while you’re getting Fit As Fido!

My wheatens are loving the cold weather and dusting of snow too. I really need to get some of this pet safe salt from Mortons for my home and for my grooming shop.
My Wheatens think that snow RULES! I’m not so sure I agree with them!

I would love to try this pet friendly salt on the steps. My Irish terrier and Wheaten terrier love to zoom around in the colder weather but also enjoy a cozy place with a blanket to warm up afterwards. This kit looks awesome!
My wheatens say they are always correct and yours, as wheatens, by definition, are also always correct!
Mags and Finn are loving the snow which we hardly ever get here. The hardest part is getting the snowballs off their legs.
It’s really hard to get pet friendly salt here because snow is a rarity! So we’d love to win this prize.
Snowy in Vancouver
Our dog likes the snow but he does not like the salt used on the sidewalks when we walk here. Then he limps along with a paw up in the air. I feel sorry for him. I actually should share the salt with my neighbors if I win.
Our 2 LOVE the snow and all the fun activities associated with snow! From eating snow balls, to sliding down the hillside, to running along as we cross country ski, snow is the best. They both wear their boots when we go for long periods of time. And yes, they do let us put them on them. When they see the boots and orange vests come out (we go over to the gamelands near our house – better safe), they both sit and wait for the boots to go on. We never salt at home… just shovel. So everyone’s paws are protected.
Congratulations, Donna. My random winner selector picked you to win the winter safety package!
