Get Your Doggie Stamps

I absolutely love writing and receiving letters. Letter writing was a daily activity for my mom when I was growing up and our extended family lived out of town and long-distance phone calls were pricey. As I’ve gotten older, the number of people in my life who share this fondness for the personal letter delivered to your mail box has dwindled, as the Internet, emails, and texting have become typical communication tools. Still, there’s nothing to brighten the end of your day like opening the mail box and getting a letter.

Staying in touch and connected with others in your social circle is an essential ingredient to good physical and mental health that we talk about in my book, Fit As Fido. And sometimes a lovely, handwritten letter can be a great way to reconnect with friends and family.

Here’s a quiz from Fit As Fido. See if you know the health benefits of staying connected with others.

What benefits can you expect by being more involved in your community:

    - Better mood
    - Better eating habits
    - Less heart disease
    - Better long-term memory
    - Longer life

Believe it or not, all of these can be important benefits of being more
socially engaged. Numerous research studies have proven that taking an
interest in your fellow man and being man’s best friend significantly improve
your outlook on life and your long-term health. (excerpted from Fit As Fido)

Today, when I go to the Post Office, I’ll be looking for their new doggie stamps — celebrating the important work of dogs. These stamps promote service dogs, search and rescue dogs, tracking dogs, and dogs comforting others — like my favorite therapy dogs!

So get connected with someone special in your life and send them a doggie stamp to add to the smiles they’ll get when they receive your letter.
